Weekly Kash: By any means necessary

The Congolese government appears intent on holding local and provincial elections as scheduled in October 2015. This despite a push by the Catholic church, most opposition parties, civil society groups, and some embassies to postpone local and provincial elections until after the presidential elections in late 2016. We are already beginning to see a slippage in the electoral calendar––the electoral commission has just given candidates an additional 20 days to register for the provincial elections, until May 25. This decision came after, just a day ahead of the May 5 deadline, the CENI was faced with a severe lack of candidates for the elections.
